This baby quilt is for the Hub's son and daughter-in-law.
I may be out on a limb here, but I decided not to do a traditional baby boy type quilt. Let me give you some background.....the Hub's son is a big time hunter - deer, turkey, etc. They've decorated the nursery in brown and green, complete with a hug tree painted on the wall with the letters of the baby's name hanging on the branches. Very cute! So, instead of using "baby" type fabric, pastels, baby blues or greens, I decided to do a mini version of a "hunter's" type quilt. See for yourself......
The baby shower is this weekend, I'll let you know how it goes.....
I often do baby quilts based on the parent's interest. Given that the baby doesn't have interests yet, it makes it more personal to the family instead of being 'just' a generic baby quilt. I've made them with whales, cats, dogs, horses, baseball, car racing, boating, and other hobbies/interests. I'm sure there are subjects that would be off limits (like my friends that enjoy wine tasting, perhaps?) One of my coworker's wife is from Australia, when their baby was born, I made a quilt with paper pieced Australian animals from Margaret Rolfe's books.
ReplyDeleteMy friends have really liked these personalized quilts. Your quilt is very nice. you've used a great selection of fabrics (good range of light and dark) and it's pleasing to the eye. I think the family will be very happy.
The only drawback I've found is that the family can be reluctant to let the baby use it. I tell them the quilt was made for the baby to use, it's not a keepsake. One of my friends had a big family and got many blankets, so I accepted that they used my quilt as a wall hanging in the baby's room.
Another friend's daughter used her baby quilt on her bed until she was 12. Then her mother commissioned me to make a new one with a soccer theme. :)
